Replacing Damaged and Torn US Currency

Every year the United States Treasury redeems over $30 million worth of damaged and mutilated paper money — currency. Here is how to get damaged or mutilated U.S. money replaced. Replacing US Currency Damaged U.S. currency—paper bills—that have merely been damaged can typically be replaced at a bank, while bills that have been mutilated must be mailed to the U.S. Bureau of Engraving and Printing for replacement. To be considered damaged but not mutilated, at least one-half of the damaged bill must be clearly identifiable. Bills that are dirty, defaced, or torn can typically be replaced at a bank.Bills that have deteriorated from being buried in soil or have been damaged by fire, flooding, chemicals, explosions, animals or insects are more likely to be considered mutilated. The Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP) does not charge for inspecting or replacing mutilated currency, however, the BEP must be able to identify the mutilated bills as being valid U.S. currency. The correct procedure for replacing US currency depends on how and how badly the money has been damaged. According to the Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP), U.S. currency that has been damaged, but not mutilated, can usually be redeemed at a bank, while truly mutilated bills require special handling. What is Damaged, but Not Mutilated Money? Damaged but not mutilated currency includes any bill that is CLEARLY more than one-half of the original bill and does not require any special examination or investigation to determine its value. Examples of non-mutilated bills include those that are badly soiled, dirty, defaced, disintegrated, limp, torn or otherwise worn out. These damaged-but-not-mutilated bills can be exchanged through your local bank. Replacing Mutilated Currency The Bureau of Engraving and Printing considers mutilated money to be less than about 51% of the original bill or any bill so badly damaged that its value cannot be determined without special handling and examination. The mutilated currency has most often been damaged by fire, flooding, chemicals, explosions, animals or insects. Another very common source of damage to currency is fossilization or deterioration from being directly buried in soil for long periods of time. The BEP redeems mutilated currency as a free public service. Mutilated currency must be mailed or personally delivered to the Bureau of Engraving and Printing. Here, according to the U.S. Treasury is how to do it: When mutilated currency is submitted, a letter should be included stating the estimated value of the currency and an explanation of how the currency became mutilated. Each case is carefully examined by an experienced mutilated currency examiner. The amount of time needed to process each case varies with its complexity and the case workload of the examiner. However, the BEP warns that heavy volume and the precise nature of the work may result in longer wait times. The Director of the Bureau of Engraving and Printing has the final authority for the settlement of mutilated currency claims. Although Treasury examiners are usually able to determine the amount and value of the mutilated currency, carefully packaging the currency is essential to prevent additional damage. In general, the BEP will replace mutilated currency if: More than 50% of a bill that can be identified as United States currency is present, along with sufficient remnants of any relevant security features; or,Less than 50% of a bill identifiable as United States currency is present and the method of mutilation and supporting evidence demonstrate to the satisfaction of the Treasury that the missing portions have been totally destroyed. Every year, the Treasury Department handles approximately 30,000 claims and redeems mutilated currency valued at over $30 million. Procedure for Mailing Mutilated Currency The following procedures should be used when packing mutilated currency for examination and possible replacement by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing: Regardless of the condition of the currency, do not disturb the fragments any more than is absolutely necessary. If the currency is brittle or inclined to fall apart, pack it carefully in plastic and cotton without disturbing the fragments and place the package in a secure container. If the currency was mutilated in a purse, box, or another container, it should be left in the container to protect the fragments from further damage. If it is absolutely necessary to remove the fragments from the container, send the container along with the currency and any other contents that may have currency fragments attached. If the currency was flat when mutilated, do not roll or fold the notes. If the currency was rolled up when mutilated, do not attempt to unroll or straighten it out.If coins or any other metal is mixed with the currency, carefully remove it. Any fused, melted, or otherwise mutilated coins should be sent to, Superintendent U. S. Mint, Post Office Box 400 Philadelphia, PA. 19105. Mailing Address for Mutilated Currency Mutilated currency, packed according to the above instructions, should be mailed to: Department of the TreasuryBureau of Engraving and PrintingOffice of Currency StandardsP. O. Box 37048 Washington, D. C. 20013 All mutilated currency should be sent by Registered Mail, Return Receipt Requested.  Purchasing postal insurance on the shipment is the responsibility of the sender. For cases that are expected to take longer than four weeks to process, the Bureau of Engraving and Printing will issue a written confirmation of receipt. To obtain information about your mutilated currency shipment, contact the Mutilated Currency Division at 1-866-575-2361 or 202-874-8897. Personal deliveries of mutilated currency to the Bureau of Engraving and Printing are accepted between the hours of 8:00 A.M. and 2:00 P.M., Monday through Friday, except holidays. The Office of Currency Standards is located at 14th and C Streets, S. W., Washington, D. C. What About Damaged Coins? The United States Mint will replace uncurrent (badly worn) coins with new coins of the same denomination and will redeem mutilated coins for their current scrap metal value. Uncurrent coins are whole coins but are worn or reduced in weight by natural abrasion. They are easily recognizable as to genuineness and denomination and are in such condition that coin sorting and counting machines will accept them. Undercut coins that are too badly worn to be redeemed by commercial banks may be redeemed only at  Federal Reserve Banks and branches. Uncurrent coins are replaced with new coins of the same denomination by the Federal Reserve Banks and then forwarded to the United States Mint. Mutilated coins, on the other hand, are coins that are bent, broken, not whole, or fused or melted together.

EFFECT OF PEER PRESSURE OF STUDENTS ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE...

CHAPTER TWO Introduction Peers become an important influence on behavior during adolescence, and peer pressure has been called a hallmark of an adolescent experience. Peer conformity in young people is most pronounced with respect to style, taste, appearance, ideology, and values. Peer pressure is commonly associated with episodes of adolescent risk taking (such as delinquency, drug abuse, sexual behaviors, and reckless driving) because these activities commonly occur in the company of peers. Affiliation with friends who engage in risk behaviors has been shown to be a strong predictor of an adolescents own behavior. However, peer pressure can also have positive effects when youth are pressured by their peers toward positive behavior,†¦show more content†¦Pre-teens and teenagers face many issues related to conformity and peer pressure. They are pulled between the desire to be seen as individuals of unique value and the desire to belong to a group where they feel secure and accepted. The result is that often teens reject family or general society values, while feeling pressure to conform rigidly to the values of their peer group. An example of this phenomenon is seen when young people join gangs. In joining the gang they are rejecting the communitys way of dressing and behaving. Yet to belong to the gang, they must conform to the gangs own style of dress, behaviour, and speech. (Kellie B. Gormly, Peer Pressure -- for students and adults -- can be positive, Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, March 18, 2013.) However, its something most parents dont want to hear, but the sad fact is that the most influential people in your teens life are their friends. Most parents like to think that they have some say in what their teenage child does, but the truth is that most parents sorely underestimate the power of peer pressure. Peer pressure can turn a perfectly level headed child into class-cutting, insolent, problem child. Why is this? Well, several reasons. First teens are not children, and theyre not adults so you cant use either form of psychology on them. A teens body is under the powerful thrall of hormones. Youre not dealing with a rational person. Hormones are powerful chemicals,

Is Facebook boosting or hindering communication Free Essays

Is Facebook boosting or hindering communication? Facebook is the most famous commonly used social media. It has become the preferred method for keeping in touch with people. Almost every young person has at least one Facebook account. We will write a custom essay sample on Is Facebook boosting or hindering communication or any similar topic only for you Order Now However useful it might be in social life and education, Facebook brought about a set of new barriers and threats in these areas. There is an irony in the sense that social media, like Facebook, has the ability to make us less social. Doubtless it may be stimulating to feel so connected with others, and et there is no way to deny that underneath this feeling, there is a sense of emptiness. Robin Sharma agrees with that fact in his book The Greatness Guide by saying that the more we are electronically connected, the more we are emotionally disconnected. In other words, while people spend many hours of their days on Facebook chatting, posting status and wishing happy birthdays and engagements to one another, they forget about the importance of conversation in the traditional way. They completely forget about the effectiveness of sitting to dinner with the family or hanging out with friends. In a word, Facebook is gradually robbing people of what distinguishes them as human beings. Not only does Facebook make us less social, but also sometimes conveys a completely different reality about its users. Anyone can hide behind Facebook posts, giving any image they want about themselves and creating an illusion about their personality. They can be whoever they want, depending on the fact that their audiences have no hoice but to be confused, having no verbal communication. So, our only real method of communication is through voice-to-voice or face-to-face communication. It is only through this way that when one hears a tone of voice or looks into someone’s eyes, they are able to know when â€Å"l am okay† does not mean they are okay at all. Thus, without any means of communication but phrases, abbreviations, snippets and emoticons on Facebook, one can never be sure whether these things are accurate representations of the truth. As for education, students, no doubt, owe Facebook a lot for facilitating their education process, but still it is a main contributor to the failure of many of them. Although Facebook plays a role in breaking the ice between colleagues in schools or universities, it wastes much of their time in chatting about trivial matters. It is true Facebook helps students keep updated with the latest news about their studies, even if they are absent from schools or universities. But student rumourmongers ruin verything by spreading so much false news that any news by any student is subject to suspicion, which turns the advantage into a disadvantage. This way Facebook is more of a waste of time for students. Facebook. Now compare this time to the time you spend in real life with your family, friends and your colleagues at school, university or work. Try to make the decision of making the best use of Facebook and try to avoid as many of its disadvantages as possible. Out of my own experience, the time and relations you are going to revive are worth giving a try. How to cite Is Facebook boosting or hindering communication, Papers

Jane Eyre Essay Paper Example For Students

Jane Eyre Essay Paper From the beginning, Jane possesses a sense of her self-confidence and contentment. Her integrity is continually tested over the course of the novel, and Jane must learn to balance the frequently conflicting aspects of her so as to find contentment. An orphan since early childhood, Jane feels exiled and out of favor at the beginning of the novel, and the cruel treatment she receives from her Aunt Reed and her cousins only worsens her feeling of alienation. Afraid that she will never find a true sense of home or community, Jane feels the need to belong somewhere, to find kin, or at least kindred spirits. This desire irritates her equally strong need for independence and free will. In her search for freedom, Jane also struggles with the question of what type of freedom will make her happy. While Rochester initially offers Jane a chance to liberate her passions, Jane comes to realize that such freedom could also mean enslavementby living as Rochesters mistress, she would be sacrificing her dignity and integrity for the sake of her feelings. St. John Rivers offers Jane another kind of freedom: the freedom to act completely on her ethics. He opens to Jane the possibility of exercising her talents to their fullest by working and living with him in India. Jane eventually realizes, though, that this freedom would also establish a form of imprisonment, because she would be forced to keep her true feelings and her true passions always in check. When she reunites with Rochester, though based on a monetary level, she non-the-less finds herself to be equal to him. It is possible to question Jane Eyres equality to Rochester on the grounds that Jane only becomes Rochesters full equal when he is physically in poor health and dependent on her to guide him and read to himin other words, when he is physically incapable of mastering her. However, the thought of Jane finding herself Rochesters equal not because of the physical decline Rochester has suffered but because of the independence that Jane has attained, by coming to know herself more fully, is also possible. Bronte seems to suggest the way in which Janes quest for love and a feeling of belonging should not influence her opinion of herselfnor restrict her intellectual, spiritual, and emotional independence. Bronte suggests that it is only after coming to know herself and her own strength that Jane can enter entirely into a well-rounded and loving relationship with Rochester, and finally achieve happiness and self-accomplishment. http://www.Spark Notes.com

The Scarlet Letter Essay Research Paper If free essay sample

The Scarlet Letter Essay, Research Paper If one is to read Nathaniel Hawthorne s novel The Scarlet Letter, they will forever retrieve the singular narrative of a adult female who succeeds against all odds. It inordinately describes the life and times of early Puritan settlers in America and the wickedness of criminal conversation. The inquiry of morality and its positive and negative effects is at the really nucleus of this narrative. Is one dark of wickedness worth a life-time of adversities? I. Drumhead Hester Prynne, a member of a one time flush and comfortable household, was arranged to get married a doctor by the name of Roger Chillingworth. Although non out of love, they are married and unrecorded successful lives in Amsterdam. When they finally decide to settle in America, Hester is set on in front of Roger so that he may complete his concern in Amsterdam. Hester does non hear from her hubby for two old ages, and many people conceive of his being lost at sea. She is found guilty of perpetrating criminal conversation and is sentenced to stand keeping her kid before Boston on a scaffold for three hours. She is interrogated as to who her fellow evildoer is, but she remains strong. Many adult females of the town believe that Hester s punishment is non rough plenty and hence, she is marked with the missive A upon her thorax. She is returned to her prison cell and a physician is summoned to assist quiet her. The physician turns out to be her lost hubby, Chillingworth, and he makes Hester promise to neer uncover that he is her hubby. She does so in return for the secretiveness of the name of the adult male who is the male parent of her girl, Pearl. Finally, Hester settles down with Pearl in a little bungalow and leads a fundamentally normal life as a dressmaker. Pearl turns out to be a really curious kid with a disobedient attitude towards life. She is imp-like in vis ual aspect and many people believe that she could be a bad influence on their comfy Puritan town. With hearing talk that Pearl may be taken off from her, she goes to the Governor Bellingham s office in order to speak him into allowing her maintain the kid. Bellingham is displeased with Pearl s attitude of the church and Puritanism, and hence decides to take her off. Merely before he does, Reverend Arthur Dimmesdale stairss in and negotiations Bellingham out of it. Chillingworth witnesses all of this and is surprised to see how strongly Dimmesdale defends Hester and Pearl. Late one dark, after fighting with his guilt, Dimmesdale goes to the centre of the town and stands upon the scaffold, squealing his guilt. Purportedly, no 1 witnesses this as Hester and Pearl join him. Abruptly, Pearl points into the shadows where they could do out the image of Roger Chillingworth. Yet another dark, while Dimmesdale is kiping, Chillingworth notices a unusual grade on the Reverend s thorax. All of t hese incidents, along with Dimmesdale s neglecting wellness, ( which Chillingworth deems to be a consequence of terrible guilt ) provide him with more than adequate information to do a leap to who is Pearl s biological male parent. While Chillingworth continues to take joy in watching Dimmesdale s physical devolution, Hester feels she must assist him and hence asks Chillingworth to let her to uncover him as her hubby. One twenty-four hours, Hester stops Dimmesdale in the forests and announces that Chillingworth is her hubby. She tells him to travel to Boston and get down a new life. Dimmesdale says that he shall, but non entirely. So Hester tells him, Thou shalt non travel entirely! They become aroused about get downing a new life together, and Hester throws her red missive amidst the trees and calls for Pearl. Pearl refuses to come to her female parent because she is non have oning the vermilion A, which confuses Pearl. To pacify Pearl, Hester once more attaches the missive to her thorax. At Election Day, ( when the new governor is inaugurated ) Dimmesdale gives a superb address but seems really weak. Returning from the church, he collapses, so regains his balance and continues frontward. He makes it to the scaffold, and with the aid of Hester, he climbs it to confront the town. He cries out that he is the true male parent of Pearl. He tears his shirt unfastened to uncover a vermilion missive A blazed upon his thorax. His confession is what finally sets his psyche free and conquers the evil Chillingworth. After the go throughing off of Dimmesdale, Chillingworth has nil to keep his hungering for retaliation, and thereby dies shortly after. His money and ownerships are left to Pearl, who has now become a lady, unlike her former diabolic ego. She and her female parent travel on to take comfy Li degree Fahrenheits in England and so in Boston after they return in a figure of old ages. Hester and Pearl become outstanding Boston townspeople, and live their last old ages in peace. II. Correspondence to U.S. History The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne does an first-class occupation of explicating the early Puritan settlements of America and the settler s life styles. It describes their rigorous faith and intolerance for those who did non stay by it. The chief country of description is the Puritan position on criminal conversation. The Puritans were an highly spiritual people with even their name connoting that they were pure. The Bible was their usher for life, as they were frequently called people of the book. Both the political and the spiritual facets of Puritan society were ruled by morality. The Puritan universe position was a society with high moral criterions such as honestness, soberness, duty, and difficult work. To acquire to heaven, the Puritans felt one must understand God. One should take to populate a life the manner God intended you to. Adultery was considered one of the worst possible offenses that one could perpetrate, under the 7th comma ndment. The Puritans frequently imprisoned, whipped, or executed those who went against the word of the Bible. Some people, such as Anne Hutchinson and Thomas Hooker were banished from their places everlastingly. The Scarlet Letter explicitly discusses the Puritan s belief in the 7th amendment and criminal conversation. As most would reason, the vermilion missive A stands for criminal conversation. Through prominence and repeat, both the missive and Pearl come to typify her wickedness of criminal conversation. As the book illustrates, Hester is imprisoned for her offense of criminal conversation, forced to stand in forepart of the town and take their ridicule, and required to have on a vermilion missive A upon her thorax. The full book revolves around her and Dimmesdale s wickedness. This was a wickedness non taken lightly in early America. From the beginning of the book, Hester is brought to the scaffold to stand and bear ridicule for three hours. The adult females of the town do n on believe this to be a rough plenty punishment and therefore, she is branded with the missive A marked on her thorax. Some townspeople even believed that executing would be the right solution, but the justice looked upon her good behaviour old to the incident and lightened the sentence. This all goes to demo how serious of a offense this was looked at in the beginning of America. The alteration in beliefs of offenses such as criminal conversation from Early America to the present is amazing. In the 20th century, criminal conversation may be frowned upon, but it is an mundane happening and the idea of executing has ceased to come in anyone s head. Possibly some of the Puritan s Torahs were excessively rigorous, but partners should set away more attempt in maintaining their matrimonies successful. It s a lifetime committedness and it should be honored. Americans have lost their finding to hold successful matrimonies. This rapid impairment seems really damaging to America s hereafter and the households within it. III. Reaction The Scarlet Letter is an astonishing novel. In no other book have I seen as far into the heads of the lead characters. Hawthorne s usage of symbols and romanticism are exceeding. Anyone interested in early colonisation of America and the settler s relationship with their church should read this book. I was drawn in from the beginning with the description of the prison and Hester herself. I was brought through the remainder of the book with graphic descriptions of the characters and their environments. Although some chapters dragged on, ( the 1s with perfectly no duologue ) many of them moved along rapidly and were really dramatic. Although I must hold missed many of Hawthorne s symbols and their significances, the 1s I did catch were outstanding. Although some were really obvious, such as Hester s vermilion A, many were easy to lose, such as the Sun typifying guilt-free satisfaction. The overall secret plan makes this fresh such a chef-doe uvre. A adult female is lonely, and with her hubby losing she has one dark of iniquitous passion for which she pays for for the remainder of her life. Her hubby comes back and finally putting to deaths of her lover through guilt and anguish. He so dies because he no longer has anyone to take his retaliation on. I believe this to be a phenomenal apparatus for a narrative. Reasoning this analysis, The Scarlet Letter is a brilliant book and history categories around the state should utilize it as a acquisition assistance. It is a authoritative narrative of a adult female prevailing over her mistake in life and wining when it wasn t idea possible. Once you are trapped in this novel, it is highly hard to go untangled.

Friction in sports

Friction in sports Free Online Research Papers The purpose of this lab report was to show that friction is involved in sport and can influence decisions on designing and buying footwear. The two experiments based around this report were on the coefficient of Friction and the angle of Friction. Both experiments were carried out in a laboratory at the University of Sunderland. Students from the University undertook the experiments and discovered that the best type of footwear to use for frictional purposes are trainers with thick tread wear on the sole of the shoe. The most frictional type of shoe used was the Adidas Barricade having a coefficient of friction of 0.78. In the second experiment metal was determined to have the highest coefficient of friction out of the surfaces the report used. It showed that metal had a coefficient of friction of 0.84, with the lowest being rubber reporting a score of 0.6. Introduction Runners who want to buy a new pair of shoes, footballers who want to have the best football boots to ice skaters who need new ice skates, all have one thing in common. They are seeking a shoe made specifically for them, whether it is to maximise friction or minimise it entirely the choice is based around it. What is friction though? Friction is a force acting parallel to the interface of two surfaces that are in contact during the motion or impending motion of one surface as it moves against another (Hamill 2003). Isaac Newton came up with his first law of motion based around friction. â€Å"In the absence of external forces, motion in a straight line and at constant speed continues indefinitely†. For instance when you slide a hockey puck down the ice it will travel on for so long until eventually slowing down and coming to a stop. Newton realised that the only force stopping the puck sliding down the ice was friction in-between the ice and the puck. But if the ice was so smo oth and had no friction at all then the puck would be able to travel down the ice until another force was able to stop it (Stern 2004). Which is why with sports performers having the correct footwear on is vital and even the correct hand wear. Which is why in javelin equipment is very important. They need enough friction on their hands to grip the javelin but also to allow it to release smoothly into the air. As well as their footwear, if the shoes they have on will not allow the athlete to stop immediately, then they are either going to injure themselves or go straight past the line and have a foul given for the throw. Friction is also involved in our bodies. When running, jumping, throwing, walking parts of our anatomy inside are rubbing against one another. Which is why the body has been designed for such forces. Hyaline cartilage is formed around bones which provides a springy pad that absorbs compression at joints (Marieb 2007). Without this then bones will rub vigorously together which will cause pain at the joint and wear down the bone. But not everywhere can stop friction becoming a nuisance. A common injury occurs with runners or cyclists called Iliotibial band friction syndrome. This is when the iliotibial band passes over the lateral femoral epicondyle continuously over a given amount of time. It is caused when the knee is continually flexed of a greater angle of 30 degrees or more, where the iliotibial band crosses over and forces itself on the epicondyle (Ellis 2007). This then causes pain and can result in surgery being needed for it to be healed. A major area where friction is always thought about is in the work place. Where slips and falls are one of the most common places to happen (Way Li 2007). This is why having the correct footwear on will help to minimise the risks of falling, and is even more important when surfaces become wet and reduce the friction to a small sum (Hammil 2003). When stepping on a wet floor, a shoe sole cannot touch the floor surface without squeezing the liquid out of the contact area. The liquid between the floor and the shoe separates the two contact surfaces and reduces the friction between them. If the correct footwear is not in force then injuries are bound to happen. This then results in what type of shoe to have and what type of tread that shoe needs when working in a practical workplace. One of the topics talked about in this report will be about the coefficient of friction. The coefficient of friction is a major factor when deciding on what footwear to have.It is the ratio of a force between two bodies and an external force pressing them together (Hamill 2003). The lower the coefficient of friction, the less friction there is between the two surfaces. This is all down to what type of surfaces are in contact with each other. Which is what one of the experiments that will be discussed in this article. Another experiment that will be talked upon is the angle of friciton. This is when fricitonal properties can be measured by, calculating how long the horizontal force and the maximum angle can be before an object starts to slide. The angle of friction is useful to determine which type of shoes can keep itself planted on an object. This is all down to the type of tread that is desgined on the shoe and how it is made onto it. But wanting to overcome friction a lot of energ y is lost in the form of heat, and causes the shoes to wear down over time. So having brand new shoes would be best to decide what shoe will have the best angle of friction. Methodology There were two different experiments that took place. The first of those was the Coefficient of Friction: Equipment used : Pasco Xplorer Any type of shoe Surface Materials – Melamine Table, Wood, Metal, Rubber, Carpet Scales Calculator Weigh the shoe you are testing on the scales and have the weight in newtons. Reset the Pasco Xplorer and attach it to the shoe, either at the shoe laces or on Velcro strap. Place it on one of the given materials and slowly pull the shoe in a horizontal direction. As soon as the shoe starts to move stop and look at the given value shown on the Pasco Xplorer. This value is the Horizontal force, which is measured again in newtons (N) Once the horizontal force and the weight of the shoe have been calculated, the coefficient of friction ( µ) can be worked out. This is done by dividing the horizontal force (Ff) by the shoe weight (N). Which is Ff/N =  µ. Record all data down into a simple table format. The next experiment is the angle of friction: Equipment used : Metal Slide Angle Indicator attached to metal slide Various different types of shoes Scientific Calculator Have all shoes lined up on the metal slide, pointing in the same direction and all levelled up. Slowly lift the slide upwards at the same end the shoes are on. Make sure to keep a close eye on the angel indicator at the bottom of the metal slide. Once one shoe starts to slide make a note of the angle and record it down. When all shoes have slid off the metal slide the experiment is over and the shoe that stayed on the longest, has he best angle of friction. Complete two more times to get an average score of all the data. To work out the coefficient of friction the formula is in tan? =  µ. E,g. if the average value is 40 degrees then an40 = 8.39. Results Angle of Friction. Make of Shoe Type of Shoe Trial 1 Trial 2 Trial 3 Average Coefficient of Friction Adidas Barricade Running 40 37 37 38 0.78 Nike air Force 1 Basketball 25 30 37 30.6 0.59 Nike Sixton Plimsole 20 20 23 21 0.38 Nike Tennis Classic Tennis 30 35 30 31.6 0.61 Asics Gel Radiance Running 30 25 40 31.6 0.61 The table shows the angle of friction results. With the highest coefficient of friction score recored was the Adidas Barricade with 0.78. The lowest score recorded was 0.38 which was achieved by the Nike Sixton. The highest angle achievd by anyone shoe was 40 and achieved by Adidas Barricade and the Asics Gel Radiance. Appendix 1 Here is a graph to show the differences of all the different makes of shoes up against each other. As you can see the Adidas Barricade has by far the greatest coefficient of friction. Appendix 2 Surface Shoe Weight (N) Horizontal Force (N) Coefficient of Friction Melamine Table 2.84 2.26 0.79 Wood 2.84 1.97 0.69 Metal 2.84 2.41 0.84 Rubber 2.84 1.72 0.6 Carpet 2.84 2.38 0.83 The table shows the force needed to pull the trainer across the desired surface. There were 5 surfaces used. The surface that needed the most force for an object to be pulled across it was metal. Gaining a horizontal force of 2.41 which converted into a coefficient of friction to 0.84. Here is a simple bar chart of the coefficient of friction scores. As seen metal and carpet were very close with scores of 0.84 and 0.83. The lowest being rubber with a score of 0.6. Discussion Looking at appendix 2, it shows the coefficient of friction (COF) for all different types of surfaces using the same object. With all having different values of the COF, this states the obvious, yet important point that COF depends on the nature of the surface involved. It might be argued though that the results given here are not relevant to everyday life because of the practical situation. Seeing how nobody was in the shoes to generate any real weight, then the COF could be entirely different, but it does give a clear view on what surfaces do have a high or low COF. Limiting friction is also involved in this experiment. Limiting friction is the point at which an object will eventually move if being pulled by an external force (Hay 1987). The limiting friction does depend on which two surfaces are in contact with each other and this is summarised by the law of friction: For two dry surfaces, the limiting friction is equal to the product of the force holding the surfaces together â⠂¬â€œ the so called normal reaction – and a constant that depends on the nature of the surfaces (Hay 1987). This law is only correct then if the surfaces are dry. If the surfaces are then wet limiting friction is reduced. For example if a cars brakes are to become wet by rain, then it takes longer for the car to stop than if it were dry. This is why increasing the distance from the car in front is vital as, your vehicle cannot respond as well. In appendix 2 it shows that the horizontal force is greater when being pulled along on a metal surface. Recording a 2.41 Horizontal pulling force. Indicating that metal is the best surface that can hold an object onto it. But surprisingly rubber only recorded a horizontal pulling force of 1.72, which was the lowest out of all the surfaces. Persson and Volokitin (2002) state that rubber can in fact have a greater COF of more than 1. Where the results show in appendix 2 that it has only recorded a score of 0.6. With the highest being meta l at 0.84. With rubber being so low then it could be argued that the way the experiment was undertaken was wrong or not accurate. One major problem would be the horizontal pulling force. It is very difficult to pull an object only horizontally and not by pulling it in any other direction i.e. vertically. This could easily effect the results when an individual is pulling the pasco xplorer. If they only pull horizontally then it is only the horizontal force. But if you have a slight angle going up or down the horizontal force is not horizontal no more. There could be a vertical pulling force on a downward force acting on the shoe. Which will make the results inaccurate. It is very difficult to overcome this though as trying to pull an object exactly at 180 degrees so human error will always occur. Looking at appendix 1, the angle of friction results came out with the Adidas Barricade shoe having the highest COF. While the Nike Sixton shoe had the lowest. This is mainly due to the shoes sole design and what type of tread it has. Way Li (2007) states that having tread grooves 9mm thick will result in added COF and will also aid in the shoe being able to â€Å"stick† to floor better. Which when looking at the tread of the Adidas Barricade the shoe tread was very thick compared to the Nike Sixton, which had very limited tread wear on it. Resulting in the Adidas Barricade being able to have a higher angle of friction. But Way Li (2007) also suggests that it is not the depth of the tread but more of the width. Which indicates that the Nike sixton had very little depth for tread and also very little width. Whereas the Adida Barricade had big wide treads to help it maintain the friction for longer. This is a very good point though as you could see with the Nike Air Force ones h ad a very deep tread but did not have the width as much as the Adidas Barricade. This designing will be down to the sport that the shoes are made for. When looking at all of the shoes in appendix 1 and what sport each shoe was specifically made for, it became clear than running shoes had a high COF. But with this could all be coincidence as the other sport involved were tennis and basketball. The one negative factor in this test though, was how long the shoes have been used and how often. Because as said earlier the more you try and maximise friction the more energy is lost in it and results in the shoe being worn down in parts. When looking at Asics Gel Radiance, this had thicker tread wear but had been worn out around the edges. Which could be said that the more you use your shoe the less it can resist friction. As the Adidas Barricade was only purchased recently it has not been susceptible to such forces acting on it for a long period of time. Other problems did occur in the experiment e.g. when lifting the metal board up on occasions it was lifted more rapidly than other times which could of caused the shoes to jerk, which resulted in momentum taking the shoe down to the bottom. As you can see in appendix 1, the results do fluctuate often. With the Nike Air Force Ones, it begins with an angle of 25 and on the last run has a finishing angle of 37. Which is very well s pread out. A way to reduce this would be to have a machine to be lifting the board up at a desired speed, very gradually with the speed staying constant. So in conclusion the results showed that the best type of shoe to have is a shoe with thick wide tread grip on the sole. This can be mainly found with running type trainers which can be purchased in any specialist running shop. As well as having thick tread it is best to keep the shoes in good condition. As the more you use them the more the tread and grip wears down. It is stated on The Runners Guide that running trainers will last approximately last up to 300 miles. So it does take a lot for them to be fully worn out. As well as with the trainers, this study also proved that metal has the highest COF of 0.84 with the lowest being rubber of 0.6. German and Germans class Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

German and Germans class - Essay Example 308) this attack on a civilian ship severely tested Wilson’s resolve but America remained steadfastly opposed to joining the war until some 22 months later. The sinking of the Lusitania, and the ensuing diplomatic row about U-boat attacks on civilian and supply ships was, not, therefore sufficient reason to justify American entry into the war. One of the main reasons why America entered the war was to protect its own financial interests: â€Å"By September 1916 Britain was purchasing American goods at a rate of over $210 million per month, and France at $38 million per month. (Burk, 1985, p. 14). While Germany also had lucrative trade deals with the United States, it was nothing like at this level, and so America had to think about the possible impact on its own position if the British and their allies should finally lose the war. There would be no possibility in the short term for these colossal debts to be paid back, and this would be bound to have a detrimental effect on the American economy for decades to come. It made financial sense, and indeed it was regarded as a matter of urgent expediency, for America to make sure that the British were on the winning side in this brutal war, and so there were very sound financial reasons why America had to step in and make sure that this would be the final outcome of the war. A further factor must also be considered, and that is the so-called â€Å"Zimmerman note† or â€Å"Zimmermann telegram† which was a piece of diplomatic correspondence sent by German diplomat Zimmermann to the Mexican ambassador, offering territorial inducements for Mexico to join the war on the German side. The proposal was, that Mexico would distract America with a war on its doorstep, while Germans, assured of victory, would recompense Mexico for its efforts with lands taken from the southern states of America. The telegram was secretly decoded by the British

New York Project Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words - 3

New York Project - Essay Example For the four shows that we intend to watch, we will spend a total of $428 with other meals and form of entertainment, since we intend to enjoy the nightlife of the city, amounting to $800. We estimate the cost of our flights to be about $800 with the total cost of our adventure being around $3,000. A visit to the theaters could not be complete without watching a play written by William Shakespeare, one of the greatest poet, playwright, and thespian of all time. Hence, we plan to watch a play written by Shakespeare titled Measure for Measure, which is a play directed by Noah Brody and Ben Steinfeld with the play showcasing at New 42nd Street Theatre - New Victory Theater. Described by Ben Brantley of the New York Times as â€Å"a study of what happens when stringent morality is brought to bear on a decadent society,† the show presents a Shakespearean theme of coupling opposites that make it interesting for individuals with an interest in Shakespeare plays. More important is the fact that a ticket for the show is between $14-38, which is easily affordable. We intend to watch this Shakespearean play on Saturday 8th March at 1PM. I first came across the musical After Midnight, when a friend told me that it featured one of my favorite winners of the reality show American Idol, Fantasia Borrino. This explains one of my rationales for the choice to watch the musical. Conceived by Jack Viertel, directed and choreographed by Warren Carlyle, the musical celebrates the legendary Cotton Club of Harlem with the shows appearing on Broadway at the Brooks Atkinson Theater. Tickets for the show range between $60 and $142 although there are premium tickets going for almost $200. Nonetheless, Charles Isherwood of the Ney York Times indicates that although â€Å"dancing is rarely showcased on Broadway these days, the abundance on view here is a particular treat.† These sentiments were shared by a fan called Akiinu whose review of the

The Supply Chain Management Case Coursework Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

The Supply Chain Management Case - Coursework Example Carrying these primary elements into consideration, it is most obviously profitable for the organization to use the outsourcing strategy since the [DVD] production on the two major companies situated outside the country is both competent in handling high-quality production at a reasonable price. The transportation cost payment system may also be negotiated with the chosen supplier to lower the cost of expenses in terms of shipment and transport of the product deliveries. 2. This case provided the data necessary to perform a cursory supplier financial analysis. In reality, cross-functional sourcing teams must often obtain this data during their assessment of potential suppliers. Discuss possible sources of supplier financial information. What may impact a purchasers ability to obtain supplier financial data? Through having a thorough conversation with the top executive personnel of the business entity being assessed, a carefully presented financial report of the company could be achieved. Through gaining such information, the company could then measure the stability of the company that they are assessing in the business. The willingness of the suppliers to get the deal done with the purchases of the products in regular terms shall indeed move them to give certain financial results from past annual records of the organization. By doing this, they are setting a connection of loyalty and trust between them and the purchaser. It is through this process that both parties could actually measure the kind of relationship that they could be sharing if they are to pursue with the contract signing to close the deal of supplier-purchaser connection between the two firms. A sourcing decision of the magnitude highlighted in this case requires a serious commitment of resources and time.   Do all sourcing decisions require similar commitments of time and effort?   If not, describe the types of sourcing decisions that justify this effort.   Describe the types of sourcing decisions that do not justify or require the level of effort and analysis required in this case.

They should also carry a wide variety of accessories, such as clothing, chest and eye protection, armor, duffel bags to carry the equipment, weapons, shoes, gloves, equipment for outdoor protection, and other things of that nature. When sh opping for this type of gear, look to ensure it has been approved by either an authorized establishment or the government. Not only does this gear protect civilians from harm, but it also helps ensure that police officers and soldiers are safe from serious injury or death. With so many companies out in the market today making and distributing tactical gear. Toddler backpacks If your child has just turned two he or she will probably think that they are completely independent now. A good way to encourage them and to plan some fun in the park is to buy them a backpack. It is important to choose the correct back pack for your toddler or you may find that you end up carrying it! Firstly the backpack must not be too long. You do not want to have the backpack pulling down or getting in the way on the slide (you may find that your child is not always willing to take off their new back pack once you get to the park!).Secondly it is important that you cannot fit too much in their back pack. There will be days when your toddler will want to take their entire car or doll collection out with them, if the back pack is fairly small then they will realize that not everything will fit into it and hence will learn to limit their park toys. Keeping it practical is an important part of everything to do with a toddler. You can guarantee that your toddler will want to carry their own picnic snacks so make sure that your toddlers backpack is easy to clean. It needs to be lined so you can just wipe out the inside. It is also probably a good idea to avoid the fabric outer layered ones as these get wet and waterlogged, and the mud sticks firmly to them. Now comes the really difficult choice what should your toddlers backpack have on it? Well, be warned that if you go for a recognized childrens character such as Noddy or Spiderman there is the chance that you child will decide that they no longer like this character and then they will want a new backpack! If you choose something more general such as a fireman bag, or a bag which is quite plain and you can pretend it is whatever you want it to be; one day it can be Dora the Explorers bag, the next day it can be Diegos backpack; it can be a doctors bag, whatever you child thinks of, you can pretend it is. Finally you need to make sure that you dont end up carrying your toddlers bag. Toddlers learn all the t ime from copying, so the more respect you give an item the more respect your child will give it. It might be a fun idea to give your toddler an old mobile phone which is no longer in use (remember to take out the battery for safety), and a key ring with an old key on it. Then when you are leaving home you can run through a check list; my bag, my keys, my phone; your bag, your keys, your phone. By doing this together he will see how important your bag is and will hopefully place a similar importance on his own bag. Now you are ready to head out together. If you are going on a long bus or train journey, I found it useful to sometimes hide a little present in the bottom of the bag, so just when it is all getting boring and the other passengers are starting to stare, you can get your toddler to delve into their bag and find a special treat if this is wrapped up, it will take up even more of the journey while they open it! Jon Kelly is a published author who writes pieces on a variety o f diverse subjects. This includes articles about all aspects of rucksacks and backpacks. If you would like to get more ideas about backpacks. Skateboard backpacks Since the hover boards of the future will be larger and taller than traditional skateboards they will require a little more room to be stored. For kids using hover boards to go to high school or using them on college campuses to get to and from the dorms, apartments or their homes special changes will need to be made on their backpacks storage systems. A few hover board designs which had been kicked around at the online think tank discussed inflatable sections of the board. If parts of the hover board can be deflated then the hover board can rest in a sleeve on the back of a custom designed backpack similar to the ones that kids use to put their schoolbooks in. Once done with class the rider will have to re-inflate the hover board; this can be done by a couple of strategies. A small pump mechanism can be incorporated into the backpack and solar powered operating by battery. The small pump would be engaged after the hover board is turned on which will allow the airflow directed into the inflatable parts. This would fill up the hover board like a balloon (half-way), but additional air pressure will be needed to fully inflate. This is where the small pump mechanism comes in. The backpack storage device for the hover board will be an integral part for the rider. Skateboards are often put into a sleeve in special backpacks with Velcro straps. The hover board will follow this tradition with only an incremental change as needed. Those who designed backpacks for schoolbooks will also get into the hover board backpack carrying business. Currently there are several patents for backpacks that hold skateboards and if you go into any skateboard shop you can see the current designs and models; these will all be changing as the number of hover boards increases into the market. There are even some inexpensive skateboard holding designs at Wal-Mart. The market potential for hover boards is most likely about 35 million users in the United States alone. Much of this will be determined by cost and efficient cease of economies of scale in manufacturing, along with current economic conditions. Accessories for hover boards will be as common as accessories for new iPods, BMX racing bikes or ATVs. There will also be new attire, safety gear and the incorporation of communication systems within the hover board available online in Internet Stores and in specialty skateboard, hover board and surfing shops. Net centrically speaking the backpack will be an integral part of hover board use in future society. -Childrens backpacks It can be difficult choosing the right rucksack for your kid therefore you should become aware of the wide ranging possibilities that you may pay for. It can be of utmost importance that we all give our kids with the right kind of backpack as befits what their ages are. Exactly what specifications should an individual pick? Exactly what color? Might the backpack be one with added wheels or simply a plain dual strap rucksack? Do you notice that a majority of young children are always in a hurry and most of the time they simply dispose of almost all their textbooks and stuff in their carriers, throw it across their sensitive backs then move out of the door? Selecting a bad kids school bags could cause them to have considerable spinal injuries and posture troubles. When utilizing school bags for kids, both shoulder straps should be used to disperse the weight of the load equally towards the shoulders. Make sure you get a backpack which includes numerous pockets to balance out the pressure on all sides. It can be harmful to lug weight that the physique is unable to tolerate so confine the weight you place on those backpacks for young people. Doctors advise that a childrens backpack need to be restricted to 15-20% of their total bodyweight. The backpack also needs to look eye-catching, fashionable and pleasing to the child. You may even choose one with large, padded straps which will not dig directly into your kids shoulder blades. Yet another alternative is a backpack on little wheels. But guarantee that the kids school allows the utilization of one. Spending some time to carry out a little shopping around before purchasing a book bag is worthy of the expense. With the new school year just beginning it seems appropriate to discuss the problem ma ny of our children are experiencing as a result of their backpacks. Textbooks, homework and other supplies place a heavy load on our childrens backs which can cause back pain during the school year and may progress to chronic back pain later in life. In 1998 the United States reported that over 12,700 children between the ages of 5-18 went to the emergency room to seek help for backpack related injuries. The reason is quite simple. Our children are carrying more weight than their bodies can handle. Carrying too much weight is a greater concern for a child than for an adult because as children grow their muscles, skeleton and brain learn from each other how to move. The abnormal positions required to carry an overloaded backpack become thought, by the body, to be normal, when in fact they are quite detrimental to our childs physical development. If a backpack weighs more than 25% of a childs body weight problems with balance precipitate injuries simply when climbing stairs or opening up doors. Waterproof backpacks Do you love the outdoors? Do you enjoy activities like camping, hiking, trekking, fishing and biking? Do you engage in adventurous sports? Does taking a break for you mean, packing your bags and heading to the countryside, river side or mountainside? Then what you really need to invest in is a waterproof backpack. Waterproof bags are a must for all outdoor lovers. They help shield electronic gadgets like cameras, torches, iPods and also protect food supplies and other essentials from getting wet. They come in waterproof materials ranging from polyurethane-coated nylon to waterproof tarpaulin. A thick lining on the inside gives complete waterproof guarantee to the users. When one embarks on adventurous trips, there could be a possibility of a sudden weather change like a thunder storm, a hailstorm or even a downright downpour. At such times a waterproof bag is like a blessing in disguise. It protects your clothes and travel items from damage. When you are on an expedition, you are pro bably cut off from stores where you can usually purchase supplies. It is therefore essential to protect ones belongings and waterproof backpacks help to do just that. Electronic items are high value items and can easily be damaged by the slightest exposure to moisture. The waterproof fabric of such backpacks protects against moisture from entering the bag, thus providing complete security and cover for your valuable goods. You can even cross a river without having to worry about your belongings if you are equipped with a waterproof bag. Waterproof backpacks come with airtight zippers that ensure watertight protection. If thrown in water they can stay afloat thereby preventing even a drop of water from seeping through. They have broad padded straps and a waist strap that helps distribute the weight of the luggage in the most comfortable manner. Most waterproof backpacks have a soft exterior which makes it comfortable to carry along. Some bags are customized with waterproof camera com partments and a special compartment for the tripod stand of the camera. This gives your camera a 100% protection against any water. If you are carrying any liquids in the bag and accidentally spilled it, waterproof backpacks will prevent it from leaking out too.Amazon.com and eBay have a great selection of waterproof backpacks. They can be purchased online and will be shipped to your destination. Many adventure sports stores also offer these products. So grab your waterproof backpacks now and go wild! Backpacks with wheels I had not thought that a backpack with wheels would in fact work for backpacking, unitl I visited web site of Jansport, I was really impressed. You put on a frame that binds you to a wheeled backpack. You can even move through logs and rocks with it. I wondered about what may other backpacking ideas are in waiting to be exposed. Here are some more attractions that I came up with. Accept these ideas, please. With backpacks without frame we have to put folded sleeping pads in the backpack for pillowing against our backs and put some support for picking the load. A new idea is to have the part of the backpack that inflates against the users back. The same technology is used for lower weight auto-inflating sleeping pads, it would only add about a bit to the weight. The backpack could then also serve as a foot-bag / foot-pad for resting. Further enhancing this idea of back-with-wheels, I envisage an auto-inflating backpack that unfolds into a rest- pad. The frame of the backpack would ser ve as a U shaped pad, with desired rigidity in the pack, too. Auto-inflating resting or sleeping bag pads hardly weigh approx 15-ounce now while frame less packs measure approx 12-ounce or more, so a perfect combination of two can be achieved in just 20-ounce of total weight. Besides plastics, backpacking food bags are now available in Wax-paper packaging, too. Now as wax paper easily burn even when they are wet, these packages serve two-times more as fire-starters in emergency. If you have to carry more water than usual, you can take a plastic bladder from boxed wine. They are low-weight, robust, and you can inflate them with air to use as a pillow when needed. All you need is a remove its soft removable covering to use a two-in-one water container/pillow. Although it is not a backpack-with wheels item, another portable backpack idea is a frame-less jacket with backpack arrangements. It can be unfolded in a way that reveals normal shoulder straps. When used as jacket, it would alle viate the pack to keep you warm and cozy. It would also make it easy to pass through heavy brushes, as it does not catch on other stuffs easily. It experiences same as putting on a large jacket over a backpack, but with low-weight and stable utility that come with the combination. It is better known as a Pack-it Jack-et. For those are full with gaming and want to walk with gaming arrangements along, may print a chess or checkers board or some other game on a jacket or backpack, and carry you game along without extra care or concern. It serves a great time-pass arrangement when you have to spend hours in the tent in a rainy time. No need to bother about pieces, you can always use stones or pine as checkers, in stead. My mind is brimming up with innovative backpacking ideas as I write this article on backpack with wheels. Most of these ideas are items with two-in-one combinations. You may like some of them and ma

Rights Of Egyptian Women Essay -- essays research papers fc

Rights of Egyptian Women Throughout written history, women have experienced status subservient to the men they lived with. Generally, most cultures known to modern historians followed a standard pattern of males assigned the role of protector and provider while women were assigned roles of domestic servitude. Scholars speculate endlessly at the cause: biology, religion, social custom. Nevertheless, the women were always subordinated to the men in their culture. Through their artwork, tomb inscriptions, and papyrus and leather scrolls, preserved in the dry, desert air, Ancient Egyptians left evidence for scholars suggesting that Egypt was once a peculiar exception to this pattern. Anthropological evidence suggests that unusual circumstances in Ancient Egyptian culture provided for women to be given equal status to their male counterparts: notably, matrilineal inheritance and emphasis on the joy of family life over maintaining ethnic purity. Legally, women in Ancient Egypt held the same legal rights as men. A woman could own property and manage it as she saw fit. One example of this, the Inscription of Mes, provided scholars with proof that women could manage property, institute litigation, and could act as a witness before a court of law. Surviving court documents not only showed that women were free to take action with the court, but the documents also show that they frequently won their cases. They could also enter contracts and travel freely, unescorted, throughout the state. This is a great contrast to women in Greece, who were required to act through a male representative. Interestingly, property and its administration was passed from mother to daughter, matrilineally. The Egyptians relied on matrilineal heritage, based on the assumption that maternal ancestors are less disputable than paternal ones. The effect of legal equality in writing and practice coupled with the ownership and administration of property led to an ensured equality. The rights and egalitarian conditions enjoyed by Egyptian women shocked the conquering Greeks. In 450 BC, Greek historian Herodotus noted: They Egyptians, in their manners and customs, seem to have reversed the ordinary practices of mankind. For instance, women attend market and are employed in trade,... ...providing scholars with an examples of conditions that brought about a particularly benign development of male-dominance in Ancient Egypt. Frictions between Parents and Children Essay

Family is an essential part of every person’s life and of our society. Family is a little world with its own values and priorities. Close families share dreams, ideas, hopes and even possessions, and it’s a good side of being a family. However, as usual, every good thing can have its drawbacks. Same with families: they can often have different types of problems. One of the most frequent and common problems is the misunderstanding between parents and children, due to the difference of generations. This problem is especially acute with teenagers, who want to have more freedom, to express their self-identity in a way they want to. â€Å"Honour your mother and father and you will live long and be well, if not, you will die† — says the Bible. Some families are happy, some are dead. It seems to me the reason is misunderstanding of each other in the family. One more thing, teenagers can take on most of the rights and responsibilities of adulthood. Before this occurs, however, they go through the period of adolescence and most of them experience conflicts at that time. They change rapidly both physically and emotionally and they search self-identity as they grow up and become more independent. Sometimes teenagers develop interests and values different from those of their parents. That sets a conflict between two generations, which leads to a gap in mutual understanding. Traditional disagreements are: the time to come home at night, doing work about the house and the friends to spend time with. I’d like to point out, that teens face a number of problems: drinking alcohol or using drugs. Moreover, some children run away from their homes. Most of them return after a few days or weeks, but some turn to crime and become juvenile delinquents. I’m convinced that sometimes parents do not care about their children. It is exactly at that age when young people need a piece of advice or help. Parents should help their children and find the right approach to them so as to make everything clear. Being able to view the problems more rationally, they should try to do their best to resolve them. We need to learn to talk our problems over in our family. If we are able to do it, everything will be all right.

Gothic novel Essay

The novel ‘Jane Eyre’ by Charlotte Bronte has been categorised as both romantic and gothic by scholars and literary critics. The plot entails the exploration of a woman’s domestic trap, a common Victorian theme, with her subjection to patriarchal authority and her dangerous attempts to escape from such restrictions and the consequences. There is a mixture of mysterious events, moonlit natural environment, beautiful dream-like landscapes, enigmatic characters. Jane is represented as the heroine of the story, the virginal Christian female character. In opposition to her is the character of Bertha who is insane and is hidden in the attic of Thornfield Hall, representing Rochester’s torment and his terrible secret. It can be argued that the plot has many entwined characteristics of both genres and it is very difficult to think of it as of one kind. The essay will discuss the way in which the novel accords with the characteristics of a romantic novel and a Gothic novel and evaluates whether it may be possible to assign it with one of the two labels. Romantic novels emphasize imagination and feeling, they focus on nature’s ability to free humans from society’s judgments and limitations. English romance narrates exotic and unusual stories, they are concerned with chivalric deeds (as in the stories of King Arthur), recalling themes of romantic medieval literature. The latter results from a period in English history when society was in search for of order and the approach was that everything had to be explained rationally and scientifically, hence often being referred to as the Age of Reason. However, the romantics’ themes are in opposition to such a way of thinking and rebelled against such established norms and conventions. The characters in romantic novels place the self at the centre of his/her own existence, this is achieved by focusing on his/her thoughts rather than actions. The theme or romantic love as opposed to passionate love is explored too and the consequences the latter would bring. Another narrative style which emerged was the Gothic novel. The background setting has a dim and imposing mansion or castle, as a backdrop to the atmosphere of mystery and suspense, where the character’s fears are explored beneath the surface of the â€Å"enlightened† psyche. Other features of a gothic tale is the presence of omens, portents and visions. There is usually a suffering, tormented woman who needs to be rescued from a controlling and lustful guardian, and in the process displays an array of extreme sentiments and reactions, such as swooning, crying and sorrow. She is usually often commanded to marry someone she does not love or commit some moral or actual crime. Supernatural events may be used to explain coincidences and many scenes evoke terror through the depiction of physical and psychological violence. So I would like to examine how Jane Eyre would seem to be typical of the romantic novel that was so popular in Victorian England, while at the same time having, in my opinion, all the ingredients for a gothic novel. The plot recalls a fairy tale ‘†¦ when you came upon me last night I thought unaccountably of fairy tales’; as Bronte writes in chapter 13. However, Bronte skilfully uses it as a frame, to give a clear picture of her great feminine consciousness, expressed in Jane Eyre’s persona. This is conveyed through the use of a first-person narration, that depicts the world around her and the others in relation to her and her point of view. In the romantic novel the individual stands at the centre of romantic fiction relating facts and experiences. In the following passage, Jane demonstrates her fervid romantic imagination, as she explains to Adele that she and Mr Rochester are going to get married and utters ‘Here is a talisman will remove all difficulties;† (chapter 24) Jane metaphorically evokes the theme of natural forces which come to her aid when she is most in need for comfort. The passage continues with, a fairy that ‘†¦ held out a pretty gold ring†¦.. and I am yours, and you are mine; and we shall leave earth and make our heaven yonder'(chapter 24). The latter depicts the traditions of dream and oral tales which was much loved by the romantics. However, these are also elements which can be found in Gothic novels, where enchantment and fear are closely related. There is much about Jane and Rochester’s introspection, their belief in the supernatural, and conflicting emotions. Jane fights against the wicked spirits of Gateshead, Lowood, Thornfield, Manor Hall, and Marsh End at the end, these supernatural elements take the form of moral choices that force her into reflecting upon righteousness. For instance, the striking of the chestnut tree by lightening, under which Rochester had proposed to Jane (chapter 22), is a portent of their imminent separation and the dangers that lie ahead. It is a perfect Gothic symbol, as nature predicts human fate. Moreover, Bronte is able to convey and juxtapose different tones in the same passage, it can change from a playful and romantic tone to an enigmatic and harsh one. For instance, when Rochester is trying to convince Jane to dine with him and she refuses, his mood changes immediately . He is upset by her answer and asks Jane if she supposes whether he eats as ‘an ogre or a ghoul’ (chapter 24). Here, Gothic elements are used metaphorically to convey the degenerating tone of such a conversation. Recalling the Bluebeard tales themes, which underlines the novel. The supernatural elements conceal emotions and have been used to symbolise the child which resides in all of us and comes out in moments of loss of consciousness and fear, and at the same time heightening the readers awareness of the fragility of the heroine/hero. As when Jane describes the red room, with its noises and mirrors, where she was secluded as a punishment, everything in the room becomes fearful to her eyes. The mere colour ‘red’ conjures up images of blood and being locked in either literally or in a moral sense is an abhorrent idea to most (it recalls also the theme of trap) (chapter 2). Another important aspect of the novel is the exotic. Romantics, in their novels, often alluded to distant places. In the story, Rochester has a house in Spain, where he wishes to take Jane once married, considering it as a more relaxed country, colourful and sensual place. Before meeting Jane, Rochester had travelled around the world in search of a foreign wife (Chapter 27). Yet, Bronte condemns such behaviour and makes Rochester feel reckless with disappointment to the point he utters that ‘I tried dissipation – never debauchery: that I hated, and hate. That was my Messalina’s attribute’ (Chapter 27). Jane rejects such exoticism and is ‘not forming a very favourable opinion’ on him, he is perceived by her as ‘an unfeeling, loose-principled rake’. What Bronte is trying to emphasise is that if romantic love was to be perceived in such a superficial light – as being just for sexual pleasure – then it together with passion, would mean a loss of the self morally and ethically. Moreover, the idea of the character who travels towards unknown distant places, against wicked and unpredictable forces (these are represented by the several lovers he mentions, throughout his journey, and finally by Bertha, his insane wife segregated in the attic of Thornfield Hall). Thus, Gothic elements are used to create a sense of loss and psychological violence, just like what Mr. Rochester experienced throughout his journeys. Bronte demonstrates an attitude towards natural forces, which ‘gravely offered†¦ help’ to such a ‘reckless’ man. In fact, he was not able to fall in love with a ‘womankind’, but with a natural ‘slender creature’ who is personified by Jane (Chapter 27). Thus, the novel entails many elements which are characteristic of fairy tales. Jane is repeatedly described as looking like a spirit, a tiny phantom, â€Å"half fairy, half imp. â€Å". Such an association permits an author to use less words to express deeper ideas, by adding powerful images through an apt use of wondrous language. The imaginary is at the heart of both narrative genres, however under many aspects Gothicism emerges to create suspense and conveys the characters’ inner torments, such as â€Å"the striking of the chestnut tree’, ‘the red room’. These contrast with the romantic descriptions of the outdoor scenes, such as when Jane runs across the countryside, are nevertheless described in a vivid and detailed manner as if Jane Eyre were painting a realistic picture of the scene in all its shades. This imagery suggests her characters’ moral condition and state of mind, therefore the mood of the story is immediately conveyed. There are numerous symbolic references to weather and to the sky, in the form of storms, rain, clouds, and sun. At the very opening of the novel, Jane sets the scene by mentioning that â€Å"the cold winter wind† had brought with it â€Å"clouds so sombre, and a rain so penetrating. † There is a full moon on the night when Bertha attacks her brother, as there is on the night when Jane runs away from Thornfield. Nature is presented as the â€Å"mother† of all creatures, which connotes Jane’s romantic side and her fragility. The scenes that are a set for Rochester and Jane Eyre’s passion take place in natural surroundings. After their wedding is interrupted, â€Å"the woods which twelve hours since waved leafy and fragrant/now spread, waste, wild and white as pine-forests in wintry Norway. † Here, Bronte adds Gothic elements, which changes the mood to one of tormented state of mind, thus anticipating Jane’s future struggles. At the end, when reunited, Rochester tells Jane that â€Å"I am no better than the old lightening-struck chestnut-tree in Thornfield orchard. † The theme of nature seems to be treated in both a romantic as well as a gothic way, due to the atmosphere which at times evokes joyful and comforting images, while at other times horrific images and death. In chapter 35, the personification of the ‘wind’ effectively suggests the way in which the mood can be created by nature. Bronte uses it as the means by which she received the message from Mr Rochester, in fact she follows it throughout ‘the passage’ until she finds her way out of that situation. This manifestation of the voice perceived in her spirit and mind, and not externally, could be construed in a gothic light i. e. as a portent or a supernatural event. There is, however, a romantic and passionate image of the voice which contrasts with the Gothic setting. The passage ‘I am coming! †¦ hush’ (chapter 37) is extremely descriptive with many adjectives ‘dark’, ‘void’ and nouns such as ‘loneliness’ and ‘hush’. The combination of this with short sentences creates an immediacy, dramatic impact and mystic atmosphere, characteristic of Gothic novels. In conclusion, by writing from an individual point of view, by creating characters who are possessed of strong feelings, fiery passions and some extraordinary personalities, by using some elements of horror and mystery, Jane Eyre is able to recreate life in a fantastic romantic way. The vividness of her subjective narration, especially the heroine who is contrary to the Victorians’ expectations, the presentation of the economical, social background of the time give her works a never dying popularity. The eerie atmosphere with supernatural associations can recall the characteristics of Gothic novels and are used in some way to justify what is inexplicable (as the voice of Mr. Rochester calling her or striking of the chestnut tree). All in all, I consider gothic as a subgenre of the romantic novel, both require drama and high emotional intensity which are elements that can be definitely found in Jane Eyre, one cannot exclude the other, it would be a great mistake to try and categorize such a masterpiece under one genre.

Breaking Bad News to Family and Friends Essays

Breaking Bad News to Family and Friends Essays Breaking Bad News to Family and Friends Essay Breaking Bad News to Family and Friends Essay Assessment item 3: Reflective Journal Part B – Death Dying; Breaking bad news SIDS 5/9/2011 Word count 500 ? Health professionals have the task of informing family and friends of their loved ones death or terminal illnesses this process occurs daily in the pre hospital environment, emergency departments and doctors rooms. A Sudden, unexpected death or impending death is a crisis for the patient family and emergency medical staff. The emergency clinician has multiply responsibilities when dealing with the challenge of death or dying patients these including the physiological needs of the patient, family and medical staff (Gary Wasserberger 1986). Deaths is a part of life. Most deaths that occur in the pre hospital environment will be beyond the ability of the EMS provider to prevent. Dealing with death is one of the most profound challenges an EMS provider will face (Soreff, Cadigan 2003). Disclosing the bad news is difficult and most professionals who have the task of delivering bad news do it badly there is no training manuals for these circumstances and every situation is different. The people who broke the news included doctors, nurses and the police. Police were thought to be the most sympathetic; doctors and nurses the least (Finlay, 1991). As an ambulance officer, I have attended many patients with terminals illnesses and have had the tasks of dealing with sudden death. My first actions will normally include dealing with the clinical side of the case and leaving my senior most experienced partner with the family’s physiological care. When I have found myself looking after the family in crisis and on reflection, I find myself going thru the processes of what occurs next with the family, the attendance of police, doctors and funeral directors. Each case I have attended is different and requires a different approach and thou we read documents and study on the best practice each case plays out in its own way. First impressions are crucial as a representative of emergency services you are granted a certain amount of the public’s trust at each new scene. You have to earn the rest by putting the patient or the family’s if the patient is deceased at ease by letting them know you are on their side you respect their comments and you want to help (Bledsoe, Porter, Cherry 2006). Understanding my own emotions and personal growth with in pre-hospital care and dealing with death and dying patients has forced me to undergo and develop a respect for death and how it effect people in different ways. Thru ongoing study and experience on the job I challenge myself everyday to arm myself with knowledge and develop skills to prepare myself with the inevitable tasks and cases involving death and dying patients. Studies show evidence that good communication skills are a prerequisite of patient care, acquisition of these skills are something we develop as we gain experience in our respective field of medicine (Del Mar, Henderson 1997). Forming a relationship with a person in a crisis may be particularly difficult; the routine elements of etiquette still need to be observed. You should introduce yourself to the patient and or relatives and friends. It’s worth obtaining some information during the conversation if possible. what the patient or family are concerned about, who is related to whom, what they already know, history leading up until the arrival of EMS and most importantly what the news might mean to the family, specifically when deal with sudden death (Del Mar, Henderson 1997). On reflection I have actively chosen to arm myself with qualities such as warmth and unconditional positive regard, empathy and genuineness to help me provide a professional positive experience for each of the patients I attend as an advocate for the ambulance service. A memo discussing an issue at work from the perspective of an employee Assignment

A memo discussing an issue at work from the perspective of an employee - Assignment Example The title of â€Å"Operations Manager† seemed to assure me that by joining this company, I would make a nice addition to my existing experience of management, that would be both beneficial for me in my professional career, as well as for the company I join. I thought that being a Senior Operations Manager, I assumed a responsibility to identify the loopholes in the current framework and culture of this company, and devise and implement ways through which they could be precluded. In order to materialize my plans, I first studied the culture of this company, and identified the stakeholders in addition to studying the contract, bill of quantities and all other documents. I also had discussions with employees from various departments in order to study issues that they had that had a significant role in hindering the progress of work. One thing that I particularly found out as a result of this survey and study was that this company lacks flow of communication between individual fun ctional departments. The lack of communication gives rise to lack of awareness. This in turn, causes disparity in the knowledge about status of work between different departments that are fundamentally involved in the operations. The disparity of knowledge results in lack of preparation for the on-going works in the departments. For example, last Monday, I expected the Administration Department to have set a car ready for me and the Consultant so that we could visit the site and I could get the approval of withheld payment against Non Conformance Reports (NCRs). I had indicated the Administration Department about the same one day in advance through a notification memo. However, when the time came, there was no car, and the Administration Manager said that he expected the NCR visit to be due on the following Monday. I had to face embarrassment in front of the Consultant and also, the payments that could have been released last Monday might take another month to be considered for rele ase now. Also, I often experience great difficulty in drawing cash from the Finance Department, as they tend to do a lot of paper work before considering the release of payment, and even after that, feel reluctant to give me the cash. This causes delay in the flow of operations and as a result, progress of the work lags behind schedule. This fundamentally happened so because no one in the company assumes the ultimate responsibility to keep the departments notified. Even if some one takes the charge, the departments would not listen because they would not acknowledge the superiority of any one department over others. In my view, the Senior Operations Manager should have extreme power and rights over other departments because he assumes a central role in the flow of work. But it seems like the functional organization structure is too strong in this company and the functional departments would not listen to my instructions or notifications unless you declare the superiority of Operatio ns Department. Therefore, I request you to arrange a meeting in which you openly declare that all departments are to abide by the instructions of the Senior Operations Manager. The way things are running presently does not let me exercise my abilities as a manager. As a result of which, both the company and I are suffering. Memo 2 To: The Employee From: The Manager Date: 26 January 2011 Subject: Re (Notification of a problem) I am
